I am Sir Robert Reid Hawley...

Hello folks...haven't been on as much lately, well not as much as i should be anyways...what is new in the world of Old Man Robb Hawley? Well well well...i am now finished EDUC 4673- Teaching English as a Second Language and the marks have been posted to my transcript...a drumroll if you will...boom boom boom...yes Robert Reid Hawley has made an "A"....a FRICKIN "A"!?!?!?!?!?!?! WTF?!?! Who would have ever thought they could look at my transcript...see the words 4.0 and an "A" besides the name Robert Reid Hawley?!!?!?!? It wasn't easy folks, say what you will but this was not handed to me, i had to work alot for this..now that i am between jobs it is not going to easy either... but i want to go on to do the other two courses in the TESOL program at Acadia U- Educ 4683: Linguistics For Teachers and Educ 4863: Acquisition of Language..besides the fact that it will give me my TESOL Certification, it will also be nine hours of education credits under my belt, something else that was denied me.. but now i know that i can perform at this level...i hope Dad is smiling looking down at me from up there...

It is the help that i am going to need..i do have an offer of employment from an old friend to be in old surroundings, but that does not start until July and that is a good oh 38 days away, i was wiating to hear on another job, but i think that looks like it is not going to be, evven thought their website keeps saying my application is "In progress" i had a good ol family friend tell me recently that they probably took one look at my resume, saw my experience and down the old shredder it went...its a dog eat dog world and someone viewing it proabably thought this sonofabitch is not taking my frickin job!!!  People....i have payments to make on my loan from the bank..i thought recieving income tax back would help, but that was taken away by those oh so lovely student loan people...yes yes i know i owe, but cmon give a sucker a break boys..so i messaged Financial Aid at Acadia University and so i am now waiting to hear back from them, i mean i went on Scholarships Canada and all i see is aid for full time students...now i know i am taken these courses online, but shouldn't i warrant some kind of help as well? Im not even asking for much, all i want is to get these two remaining courses and get my TESOL teaching certificate.. a bursary or a scholarship of some kind...if they can give it to kids whom are wet behind the ears coming out of high school and into university who haven't been in a university classroom a day in their life, then someone whom is a college grad, been teaching, came back, made an A and has a CURRENT GPA of 4.0 should warrant some consideration as well.....what do i know..to the decision makers maybe im just some dumb hick from Middleton...

After all..how many chances does one really get? Yes i have had chances, yes i have blown chances, but the fact of the matter is that im still standing...i am proof that someone can come back to university at a later age, heck i went to university with people in their 50s and they have turned out well...anybody that tells me that university is nothing but a young person's game is full of SHIT and has no frickin clue what they are even talking about. I have seen people get loans and blow them... i have a real good friend of mine who bought a car with his student loan money, people who get bursaries and scholarships only to get them taken away because they did not keep up their GPA or what have you, who drank or smoked themselves till their brain was nothing but a bowl of soup... i have worked and worked for this, paid the piper and now im on the verge of having it, having that TESOL Certificate and i am only being stopped right now because of $$$... shouldn't it be on merit? Your credentials? Have people forgotten this or are profits (Making the $$$) all that university institutions care about?

Credential- A credential is an attestation of qualification, competence, or authority issued to an individual by a third party with a relevant de jure or de facto authority or assumed competence to do so. The academic world makes very extensive use of credentials, such as diplomas, certificates, and degrees, in order to attest to the completion of specific training or education programs by students, and to attest to their successful completion of tests and exams. Documentation of academic credentials usually consists of a printed, formal document designed to last a lifetime without deterioration. The issuing institution often maintains a record of the credential as well. Academic credentials are normally valid for the lifetime of the person to whom they are issued.

Ok enough ranting...lets think about other stuff...

Since i last wrote here...the Habs have eliminated Crosby's Penguins and are now in a dogfight with the Flyers in the semi-finals...it didn't help that the Habs didn't really do so well in Philly but once the series got back to Montreal the Habs responded by beating the Flyers 5-1... now Chicago is up on the Sharks 3-0 in their series..wouldn't it be something if the Habs pulled it out and we had an original six match-up for Lord Stanley? Wouldn't Gary Buttman shit his pants??!?!?! Oh and i must say this...i am on the side of the fence that thinks Crosby should have went overseas and joined Team Canada at the World Championships....i know the kid played alot of hockey this year...but i also remember Gretzky back in 82 after the Oilers were embaressed by the Kings in the first round hopping on a plane and joining Team Canada...he could have said no, but he felt it was his patriotic duty...and did anyone nothing how good the Russians are at the World's and how little are left in the NHL Playoffs?!?!!? Something tells me that is more important to Russian NHLers than Lord Stanley... something tells me something fishy, like some half-hearted efforts were happening...shame shame shame...i dont know about this current generation of players...

I bet she could have made me a Hartford Whalers fan...

Recently i have been thinking talk is cheap when it comes to some people..some people who never took a chance in life and now are just sitting and stuck because of some of the dumbass decisions that they have made the past 20 years...sure i am no saint if you will...but i am not just going to sit here and make shit up because stuff sucks... some people make decisions, not always the best ones..but don't sit there and tell people out and out lies..cause that is the stuff that comes back to bite you in the ass..you tell a tall tale to people and then it becomes an even bigger tale...just losers with nothing but time on their hands and jealous of how others have taken life, done the school of hard knocks and made something or done something that they are very proud of..we are all given the same chances, maybe some less than others and maybe some more so than others...maybe some didn't take the chance..no need to hit others over the head or talk smack...its despiration at its worst...other people hear their crap and well..most people i know will think the better of it and just consider the source.. people will assume..but like the saying goes, assume means you will make an ass out out you and me...but definitly more you...
Oh...Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn is finally hitting DVD in August... a little scared because according to Amazon it is listed as being FULL-SCREEN?!?!!?! This was originally in 3-D in the theatres and at a ratio of 2:35... ugh..hate FOOLSCREEN...i must agree with Roger Ebert that anyone who wants to watch a movie with the sides of the screen cut off should have their rights to operate a dvd player taken away... nothing worse than watching half a movie...how would you like it if your favorite album had the first and last songs cut off it? You would freak out!!!! Well folks it is the same damn thing!!!! Me and Dad went to see this one in the summer of 1983 at i believe the old Casino Theatre in Halifax...an awesome piece of 80s cheese i must say....
I did get up to Wolfville with Sir Justin the other day and i hit the town..it is nice to get back up there after spending all those years there and see the old spots like The Market, Joe's Food Emporium (Axemen Subs rule!) and went to Cajuns where FINALLY i saw residence shirts for sale...i was told that they were only made for convocation, but i spoke to the manager and she told me that if i phone ahead i can have a Tower t-shirt specially made as the makers are local (Always nice to see) ahhh..Wolfville has to be one of my favorite places to go in the summer...sometime i will have to get up there and get some Scots Skins from Joe's..always a favorite...

Picked up "Punk Goes Classic Rock" on CD the other day...some of these are either hit or miss with the "Punk Goes" series...some fun to be had with some of these covers especially Hit The Light's version of Boston's "More Than a Feeling" Every Avenue's "Take Me Home Tonight" originally by Eddie Money (An old pal thought his name was ERNIE Money...went to see him open for Cheap Trick in 88 and that is what my friend thought his name was....honestly...) and some of the others were ok...the only problem was sameness...the appeal of the other "Punk Goes" CD's was the fact that the songs were punked up...like what would this sound like by a punk band...kind of like how Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies can take a Jackson 5 song and make it their own...the covers here of "Bohemian Rhaspody" suffer from being straight remakes of the originals and not punked up at all... oh well it makes for a good listen in the car...
Drove my brother home to Bridgetown the other day and saw a few of the sites..including a pretty awesome antique store in Lawrencetown.. a sign on the backdoor says if no one is there you have to go next door to get the dude.. quite a collection of stuff i will tell ya, signs, stubbie beer bottles, old cans and bottles, toys and ALOT of KFC memorabilia including Col Saunders salt & pepper shakers and a MUG...$20 and a Col Saunders mug could have been all mine!!! Ahhh...i guess i will have to make a trip back there sometime and grab one before some piece of crazy wormslime beats me to it!!!!

I do want to make mention before i go downstairs to watch the Habs-Flyers game of my final chapter for EDUC 4673 and i wrote an article about how to improve my teaching...After spending the last couple of years overseas teaching, one of the best decisions i made was starting to take this course so that i can receive my TESL certification. The lesson made a point of saying for teachers to be careful about taking a teaching job overseas. From my own personal experience i must agree, make sure that you talk to others or look for notes posted on the internet from people whom have taught at this school and it is always a good idea to take extra money with you when you go to teach overseas.

A positive working environment with teachers whom get along and communicate and benefit from one another knowledge is one most teachers would prefer, especially important for new teachers. A negative working environment only leads to it showing in the classroom, an unhappy teacher is very noticeable to students, even those who speak a different language and or of a younger age. Teachers become disinterested, barely will do more that they are required to do in a day and just want their day over with when working in a negative environment.

I feel that there are too many amateurs around who think that it is enough to know English in order to teach it. This has been the case when i have been overseas teaching and there are many teachers who have just a BA and they are teaching new language learners. On the other hand there are amateur teachers who perform their classes just as well as trained professional or in some cases, even better. I agree with the point that there are too many laypersons in charge of the authority as well, many of these i saw in charge of schools overseas who do not have the qualifications to run a school, but yet can do to have alot of finances. I feel that professionalism can be increased by putting more qualified people in positions of authority such as school boards, board members, principals etc. In many foreign countries i think the education board should be more involved in teacher selection and who runs the schools, the schools should be ran by professionals, not people looking for profit which in turn is just exploitation of both students and teachers.

Have a good one folks.. :)

RIP Ronnie James Dio

One of the most legendary voices in all of heavy metal, Sir Ronnie James Dio passed away this weekend..how does Old Man Robb feel? Well..if i can be greedy for a moment i had always wished i would have had the opportunity to see this man perform live no matter what the band- Rainbow, Black Sabbath, his awesome solo stuff and of course his reunion with the Sabs w/ Heaven & Hell... i wished i had made the trek in 2008 to see Dio and the Sabs along with Judas Priest, Motorhead and Testament in Toronto, but that was then and this is now. Of course i can damn Halifax for never booking Dio in any of his bands..why i dunno..the closest to the Sabs coming here was 1983 with Ian Gillan, but the show was cancelled here and in Moncton due to the stage set being too big and could not fit on the stage...

Back in 83/84 is when i first heard "Live Evil" after a guy at school lent in to me in exchange for ZZ Top "Eliminator"...like the ZZ Top, but man..Live Evil blew me away with Dio's reinditions of Ozzy's Iron Man, NIB and others...then i found the other two Sabbath-Dio cassettes at the Sears Bargain Basement- Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules and i was all set, of course i also had a bunch of the solo stuff as well...if Ozzy would have had a permanent replacement in Sabbath, i used to wish it would have been Dio...although i thought Ian Gillan/ Born Again was awesome as well..

It may sound a little silly, but Dio always managed to get back with the Sabs around the right times, i was almost finished high school when Dehumanizer came out, then i was in the middle of negotiating to teach in S Korea when they reunited as Heaven & Hell and put out, "The Devil You Know" around the last week that i was teaching in S Korea...of course there were several people i was working for that i thought were the Devil That i Know...and of course how true that prophecy turned out to be... appropriate music for trying times, always good to know i could turn to Dio and the Sabs..no BS, no changing for any labels, just hard driving metal the way it should be...

RIP Ronnie James Dio...you will be missed....  \,,/

Friday The 13th/ Mother's Day= Holy New Jersey Terror Duo...

It is hard to believe that tomorrow May 9th is the 30th Anniversary of the release of the original Friday The 13th...May 9th, 1980... As Joe Bob Briggs said it best, "That is the day that red meat came back into the American diet" Sure the original Friday was a rip off of the original Halloween blueprint..but to me it was the scarier of the two...actually the original wasn't even the first Friday i ever saw...that would have been Friday The 13th Part 3..which was sadly not in 3-D..we were moving from Edmonton back to the Passage in the summer of 1983 and staying in Holiday Inn's which came with HBO..after a rainy afternoon which meant not really leaving the hotel and watching Grease 2, the original Clash of the Titans and Rocky III little Robbie was supposed to go to sleep...but between G2 and the Clash was an ad for a movie...with a big dude in a hockey mask... needless to say little Robbie liked hockey and had to see this dude...so with my Parents asleep next door and my brothers fast asleep...Robb turned the tube back on and first watched a cult film made in Canada called Humongus...

Was a pretty cool flick..well for the summer of 83 it was pretty cool...still not out on DVD (Who got the rights?) and probably remake fodder waiting to happen...

Now here was the main event...kids show up at a cabin with a barn where Jason is hiding out nursing his wounds from Friday 2...personally i think the big guy just wanted some alone time and these punks and three bikers who i used to tell kids were Gordon, Susan and Bob from Seasme Street showed up and were screwing around..so Jason killed a fat dude named Shelly and took his hockey mask...the original Part 3 was in 3-D and i downloaded (yes please forgive me movie gods...i never thought the damn thing would ever come out on DVD in 3D) the 3D version a few yrs ago...was much better than the current Cashamount...i mean Paramount 3-D dvd...

Anyways it wasn't till a few years later in the Passage that i rented the original Friday from the Dairy Bar in the Passage down by Lloyd's...i remember being like..whoa...wait a minute? Where's Jason and SPOILER...Who is this old lady killing everyone? WTF?!?!!? Anyways the original Friday was a spooky flick and had lots of atmosphere...it was also released the same day as the Shining which sorry Jack Nicholson i fell asleep watching and really that flick as classic as it is could lose an hour or so of its running time believe me... when the original Friday came out critics had a field day...Ebert went as far as printing Betsy Palmer's (Jason's mama) name so people could write to her...now whenever someone stands in front of me...especially as a kid and says you can't watch that...that scary movie is bad or you cannot listen to this band..they are Satan personified, Dammit...that made me wanna watch the movie or buy that album even worse!!! What was so naughty that i couldn't watch or listen? The unknown always makes one more curious...so yeah critics and artsy fartsy's talking about how rotten Friday was made me want to see it even more...

Which brings me to Mother's Day..which was shot across the same lake as Friday The 13th up in the woods of New Jersey...now this was a film critics and actually alot of people HATED..but once i saw past the films nastyness...there was alot of social commentary on the state of the American family and consumerism and people's obsession with goods.. i remember one of the brother's in the movie naked Ike grabbing a helpless victim and stating "You take a look around...we citified!" (Civilized)..At times the characters are scary, the next minute they are cartoonish eating Trix Cereal out of swill buckets, their bedroom decorated with action figures and a Big Bird clock...Plus Ike & Addley argue all the time (Punk Sucks...Disco's Stupid...) and their entire world..like Jason's is surrounded by their Mama who yells at them through a bullhorn during a hysterical training sequence..

Of course last year Friday The 13th was remade..well more like rebooted and this year Mother's Day has been remade..except it don't really look like Mother's Day...just another bunch of teens picked off bad tv shows and magazines and their Mother played by the hooker from Risky Business..remakes/ reboots run Hollyweird because well...Hollyweird is out of ideas and since the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre did so well in the summer of 2003 it has been remake central...while indy/ new filmakers with fresh ideas have to sit and cool their heels while waiting for their big break...imagination is thrown to the wind while the Micheal Bay's of the world laugh hysterically to the bank with moviegoers hard earned $$$ and last week's remake/ reboot/ reimagining of A Nightmare on Elm Street did just that... oh these hacks..i mean Hollyweird filmakers... i guess its time for Jason, Pamela Voorhees, Ike, Addley and their Mama to be resserected and find these wormslime...what do i know? Im just a moviegoer...gimmie some more remakes/ reimagining and reboots and the wheels on the bus go round and round...

Forgotten History Lesson- The WHA

On May 6th 1973 the 1st WHA Championship was decided as the New England (Later to be Hartford)Whalers beat Winnipeg Jets, 4 games to 1...why the big deal? Well....its the one league that the NHL wants to remain dead and buried..like a bad memory of a bad relationship..remember that league NHL? The one you ignore in the history books but didnt mind screwing the teams over when you brought them into the NHL fold in 1979...dispersal draft my ass...the last thing the NHL needed in 79 was the Winnipeg Jets skating around with the Stanley Cup after telling everyone they were bush league for seven years, if the league was so bush, why didn't the NHL let them prove it instead of stripping the teams of 13 skaters each? The league was chickenshit...its like a bully saying lets fight...ok now tie one leg and one arm behind your back...exact same thing...

Robb with the WHA's Avco Cup

Sure The WHA brought over Europeans (Bet Don Cherry loved them...) and some of the teams had some bad fashion sense...but the WHA also brought in high contracts for hockey players whom were always being screwed over by managers and owners, it also eliminated the red line from hockey, speeding up the game and lowered the draft age to 18.. in inter-league competition the WHA did well against their NHL counterparts, were the first to adapt overtime during the regular season to attempt to settle regular season tie games and were really the first to give more American born players a place to play. The only WHA team left in existance today is the Edmonton Oilers..

Robb with Mr Hockey Gordie Howe who was lured out of retirement in 1973 by the Houston Aeros and played in the WHA for another six years and one more year in the NHL in 1979-80.

Lost in Thought...

Hey gang! What is a happening? Well Old Man Robb is getting closer and closer to having his education course complete.. Chapter nine is on Intercultural Communication and there are some great points made about the english language and why people feel it is necessary to learn it. Social and economic globalization has made necessary the use of an international means of conversation in the world- English is the language of international conversation. In 1985 it was estimated that the number of people using English was one and a half billion. 75% of the world's mail is in English...There were some parts later in the chapter that dealt with do's and don'ts in the classroom and i found something that i could relate to in many ways...

It talked about having a student is always sick/ lethargic and does not seem to even try to learn what you are teaching him. Think about your student's background. Perhaps they are experiencing culture shock, they are in a new place with new people and food. It is considered a honeymoon because they are in a new culture and everything is exciting and new, however they can start to feel rejection, negative feelings, regression- thinking about their home country, become isolated and escaping from a world that they do not to be in. Perhaps they will recover and while finding things strange, they are comfy. There is reverse culture shock when students go home and find everything is backwards. You need to talk to your student, identify the problem and make them comfy.

Not so much in S Korea, but in Japan this is how i felt the first little while i was there... i remember becoming quite frustriated with NOVA holding back my pay and in many ways in Japan i felt alone because teachers came to work that day and they would go back to their apartments, many of the female teachers had boyfriends back home as well as some of the male teachers had girlfriends and in some cases married. This made me felt well..kinda like a stranger in a strangeland and so the first little bit there i spent quite a bit of time at internet cafes instead of exploring this exciting new land i had around me. Add to that frustriations at work as well with student complaints for talking too fast..but its that non-confrontational culture they have there too...alot of student's would not tell me to slow down or you speak too fast...they would complain to the staff, teachers were basically held hostage..curriculum in those kind of schools? Like S Korea there is no curriculum, the only thing that matters is cold hard $$$ and of course i would be thinking things are going great...awesome...only to get a complaint about a student being unhappy...except it would be April and the student complained the last week of February...never could catch a break...

It was a decent little weekend around these parts...got to go catch some UCW Wrestling action on Sunday night..how many times can you that you have seen a line-up outside the doors for independent wrestling action in the Maritimes the last few years? Not too darn many..it was too bad about Jake Roberts not being allowed across the border, but we still have Honkytonk Man, Bushwackers, Highlanders, Doink The Clown and Marty Jannetty...Mr Jannetty signed an autograph for me or him and Leaf Cassidy (Al Snow) when they were the "New Rockers" it was a good night...that is me and Jerry Neville from AVR pictured below...its also the last time i dont bring extra batteries to the matches as i ran out well before the main event...oh well it was a fun night out.

Of course the next card is rumored to be in Berwick at the fabulous Berwick Arena with more WWF legends in attendance...

Of course i had another trip to Pearle's with my Momma...i think that before i go next time we are going to have to phone in our order...line-ups are crazy at this time of year..of course for good food it is always a good thing to wait..good things come to those whom wait.. but just food for thought i guess...of course a good friend told me that he saw lots of activity at the Turkey Burger down in New Germany and upon investigation the new owners are going to be giving it a make-over, but are re-installing the old booths to keep a bit of that original flavor and are keeping some of the more famous items off the menu... can't wait to see for myself later this summer...

Yesterday was Star Wars Day in the United States...ok..seriously guys..go outside and TALK TO A FRIGGIN GIRL!!! Star Trek fans...see previous sentence...then again talking to girls aien't like dusting crops boy...jeesh..
Another friend told me about another site recently and well..it peaked Old Man Robb's interest...the site is called Swap.ca and sadly for old farts like me i fall past the cut offf date...kinda unfair if you ask me..kinda like saying who cares if you have experience and all that stuff, we just want people aged 20-35..so for guys like me there is no going to the USA, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria etc etc...however what did peak my interest is that there is no such limit (According to the website) about going to China..now Old Man Robb has lots of bills and lots of wormslime are after him for his $$$ but i do like some of what is offered...now the pay is only about $500 a month, but that is because you room and bills are taken care of for you, and i read that you can live quite comfortably in China off $500 a month...the other thing i like is that you can decide on going off on either a five month term or a ten month term...at least with a five month term you can decide if you didn't care for it that you were only out five months... but the cut-off date for signing up is May 15th...so if Old Man Robb decides that is what he is doing, he best hurry up...
They said that "Only Nixon can go to China"....i would like to dispute that notion somewhat...

Something as a Habs fan i would like to address is something that happened back in Game #2 which the Habs won... Sid The Kid grew frustriated after taking some punishment in the corner, broke his stick on the ice, glare at the ref and chuck his stick in the corner like a brat who got the puck stolen on him in house league.. just laugh at some of the temper tantrums that he takes from time to time.. ..if that had been some jabroni player playing for the Habs or the Pens he would have went to the box for unsportasmanlike conduct or delay of game...but the league as always has two sets of rules, one for its stars and one for everyone else...it is not something written in stone, but just damn obvious...someday he is going to have his head down and some big defenceman is going to take his head off Scott Stevens style guaranteed....same goes for Matt Cooke and a few others of the Pens...

Picked up the Iron Man 2 soundtrack the other day...well the whole thing is AC/DC...kinda like a greatest hits album with alternating Bon Scott and Brian Johnson vocals...lots of tunes you didn't expect to hear either like Guns For Hire, Evil Walks and If You Want Blood in addition to the classics like TNT, Highway to Hell and Back in Black...if nothing else it makes a good summertime driving album for old dudes like me...just think if they have more sequels all they will have to do is dig back into the AC/DC archives for more material...

Speaking of AC/DC..a great tribute band by the name of "Dirty Deeds" is playing Memorial Park in Kentville on May 28th with a few other bands...saw them with Dressed2Kill last year..its free and alot of fun... felt kinda sorry for Kim Mitchell because he was playing outside of Boston Pizza and in a tent for $30....but i weighed that over a free concert..there were a few hundred at KMs show and a few thousand at a free show...cover bands sometimes get a bad rap, but if you emulate well like D2K does and put on a good show and play some fan favorites and mix in a rarity or 2 then its all good...i know this weekend if i have some extra $$$ i might go to the Seahorse and see this...

Of course before i go i was fooling around with an application on Facebook for Bud Light's NHL Yourself! Photos...i will leave them with you true believers...have a good one im outta here!

Batman is Born...

Hard to believe but on May 1, 1939 Batman made his first apperance in a comic book in Detective Comics #27...its kinda funny my introduction to Batman was through Adam West's 1966-69 campy TV series which has yet to be released on DVD due to well litigation...Fox owns the TV show, but Warner Bros owns the characters and trademarks via way of DC Comics...a bummer for fans although im sure one good Ebay search could find the show for its many fans...i used to watch of course the Superfriends and this short lived Batman Saturday morning show in the mid 70s...i think Filmation did it and it was pretty rad except for Bat-Mite who was kind of the Scrappy-Doo of the show which brought Scrappy-Doo heat from me and my friends..i owned the Mego action figure..clothes, pajamas etc.. i still have my Batman bank my parents bought me somewhere.. i might catch heck for this so i might as well say it...i never bought Micheal Keaton as Batman...i never did...Val Kilmer was ok..Geroge Clooney would have been good if he had a better flick..one of the last movies i ever saw at the Capital and one of the worst...the new dude is a much better Batman...however Adam West is still my fav...along with the Bat Shark Repellent..but that is a favorite story for another time.. ill be blogging sometime later...some Robb time..same Robbblog...
